Course Description:  In Sixth Grade English Language Arts, students will comprehend and continue to develop an appreciation of written and spoken language that begins to extend beyond the classroom setting.  They will broaden their vocabulary and reading experience through new vocabulary, studying, and being introduced to compelled literature, while continuing to develop their writing styles.

Reading and Literature
-The student will read and analyze a variety of literary texts such as poetry, drama, short stories, and novels to acquire an understanding of the conventions of each form.
-The student will read and analyze a variety of informational texts to develop an understanding of organizational structures, such as cause and effect or comparison-contrast, and graphic features, such as diagrams and illustrations that are typically found in nonfiction.
-The student will acquire new vocabulary and use it effectively in reading and writing.
-The student will recognize and trace the development of the author’s argument for and against an issue.
Reading across the Curriculum
-The student will read the equivalent of 1 million words per year from a variety of subject areas.
Writing
-The student will produce a variety of writings such as persuasion, narrative, expository, and response to literature.
-The student will use technology to research topics and to produce various products such as essays and presentations.
Conventions
-The student will learn and apply the rules of Standard English in written and oral language.
Listening, Speaking, and Viewing
-The student will participate in effective oral interaction with the teacher and with other students.
-The student will listen to and view various forms of media in order to gather and share information, persuade others, and express ideas.

Course Outline:  This course will allow the student to master the different aspects of Language Arts while enhancing their vocabulary, writing skills, grammar/mechanics, and knowledge of literature and speaking skills.

Materials: 

Language Arts notebook or a dedicated divided section
Black, blue and red pens and pencils
Markers, colored pencils, glue and scissors will be needed for classroom projects.
 
Bound composition book for journal writes
Notebook paper
 
Kleenex and/or hand sanitizer are optional. Items will be stored for student usage.

 Grading Scheme:
 Major tests, projects, reports, longer writings  50%
 Quizzes, shorter writing, daily work   40%
 Homework      10%
 

Special Projects:  Students will be notified in advance of special projects and their due dates.  Projects will have rubrics to explain what the required components will be.  Projects count as a major grade.

Homework Expectations:  Students will have homework most nights.  Homework should not take more than 20-30 minutes to complete unless it is a major project or writing assignment.  Any writing must be completed in black or blue ink or typed.  Student should double space for revision and feedback and should use the front side of the paper only.

Provision for Improving Grades:  Students who have low or failing cumulative grades (73 or below) may ask the teacher for opportunities to improve their grade when all required work in completed and the student had demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.

Scheduled Help Sessions:  We will be available before for students who need to make an appointment for extra help.  The scheduled help times are Tuesdays from 7:50-8:20 a.m. or by appointment.

Teacher/Parent Communication:  E-mails are a great way to deal with minor questions or concerns.  Grades may be checked on the Internet and will be posted within a week of the assignment turn-in date.  Conferences will be scheduled by the teacher or parents as needed.

Absence Make-Up Procedures:  Following an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to request work that needs to be done.  If the student misses an assignment or test, then he must make an appointment to meet before school to make-up the assignment.  For additional policy information, please refer to the Fulton County student handbook.
